I was mentally compiling the report for this week’s club run on the return leg. “Nothing remarkable to report”, it would run; “aside from the light winds, bright skies, terrific new road surface from Holme to Yaxley” etc. etc.
Then at Sawtry, all that changed! Turning the RH bend to take St. Judith’s Lane, Owen came down heavily on his right hand side, a victim of the very slippery road surface. Fortunately no serious damage to Owen, but his new(ish) Canyon did not get off so lightly. The rear mech. hanger had snapped off. Given this looks to be an integral part of the frame, this looked like it was game over & an expensive repair bill to follow.
Whilst Owen was trying to locate his team support vehicle (AKA his Wife – where are they when you need them?) by ‘phone, Tom manfully set about shortening the chain & turning it into a single speed. Fortunately we were in a sunny spot which made this not too grim a task. We waved Owen off as he took the shortest route home & the remainder of the A’s continued the run home. Well done Tom!
Other than Simon, Tom, Roland & Paul driving the train along the B1090 with me hanging on for dear life, nothing else to report!
Oh, apart from the ‘coffee & pie deal’ at the Garden Centre. I love a bargain, and the sight of the ‘2 for one’ offer of a coffee & mince pie was too much for me to resist. This transpired to be one large (well, a mug of) coffee & 2 tiny mince pies! No wonder I kept being dropped on the climbs due to lack of fuel! (that’s my excuse!)
Not counting Owen’s tango with the tarmac, it was a good ride for the A group in lovely conditions. If you made it out, I hope you had a great ride. It was good to see one or 2 new faces at the start. I hope you enjoyed the run & we look forward to riding with you again soon.
