Club news: The Circuit of the Fens

Despite no participating St Ives CC members getting in the top places, the club sponsored ‘Circuit of the Fens’ road races, which took place in and around Whittlesey on Sunday, were a huge success. It capped off a good weekend for the club, with Lee Desborough and Malcolm Smith, both preparing for Sunday’s main event, finishing in the top 10 at the Elveden Road Races in Suffolk on Saturday and Becky Hime taking 5th place in the women’s race.

The amateur race was won by Carl Dyson of the Clay Cross Road Team, whilst in the Professional race, a group of 10 riders pulled out a four minute gap early in on. After about an hour of racing it was the eight man Team UK Youth, fresh from success in the national, city centre Tour Series, who worked hard to close the gap. This they duly did and, once the escapees were under control, a second group of eight, including four from UK Youth, went clear, and it was this group which contested the win.

After the rigours of the Fenland circuit, there were six laps of Whittlesey town to finish the day off and Bialoblocki of UK Youth, crossed the line first leading home two team mates to complete a UK Youth 1-2-3.

Race organiser, Tom Caldwell was pleased with how the day went, “It was a pretty stressful day, but all in all I think it went pretty well. We got the big crowds out, and the Police secured the roads well,” he said after the race. “We’ve learnt some lessons, more about policing and getting the road closures right, but over all it went really well.”
