St Ives Cycling Club riders were out in force at the weekend, with riders competing in road races, time trials and at the velodrome.
On the hottest day of the year so far, Tom Platts rode his first ever 100 mile time trial when he took on the Sculthorpe course in Lincolnshire. He rode at over 22mph for 4½ hours and finished in a creditable 12th place, only 38 minutes behind the winner. He was delighted to finish so strongly so is already planning how he can beat his new personal best.
Dave Hulatt was also in time trial action and was one of six St Ives Cycling Club members to ride the Peterborough Cycling Club 10 mile open event. Dave finished in a strong 10th place after taking only24 minutes and 16 seconds to race around the 10 mile course.
Malcolm Smith was once again putting in an amazing performance in a road race when he rode on a horrible day in the Elite Andrews Trophy event in Southend. His main threat came from semi professional road racing team, Richardsons-Trek, who had a lot of riders in the race and managed to put five of them into the final twelve man breakaway. Malcolm beat them all as he raced cleverly and strongly and, despite nearly being pushed off the road in the sprint, finished in a superb 2nd place behind Kieran Brady, a rider less than half his age riding for CityCycleCentre.com
Last, but not least, youth rider Sophie Saberton took on the velodrome in Welwyn for the Youth Omnium. It was her first ever omnium at National level and she did not disappoint, finishing in 9th place despite being on a hired bike! The Welwyn velodrome is famous for producing Olympians such as Emma and Laura Trott, so who knows how far Sophie could go.
The midweek time trials are now underway and members are looking forward to another busy weekend of racing and riding, just weeks before the Tour de France hits the county!
