At the latest of their monthly meetings, held at the Dolphin Hotel on the 9th September, St Ives CC committee discussed the club’s future aims and objectives, along with the current state of the club. One of the main threads of conversation was the lack of communication between members and the various parts of the club and a decision was made that there should be a monthly newsletter circulated to all members. So this is the first one. There is a plan to make this more interactive, with links to the news from each of the clubs areas of activity, but give us time.
One of the other methods of communication which was spoken about was the club forum. Before the site was revamped the previous forum was well used and proved a vital line of communication, so come on members, get chatting!
More of the meeting later, but in other news the club currently sits top of the Eastern Road Race League, following Gerard Miley’s first ever win at the Victoria Road Race in Essex. Peter Balls and Mick Hodson are going well in time trials and the Go-Ride Youth section is continuing to go from strength to strength, now offering both mountain bike and road sessions to under 16s on the first and third Saturday of the month during term time – read the latest updates from Go Ride. The weekly time trials have been better attended than ever, and will finish with the hill climb at Spaldwick – take a look at this year’s TT results .
Sunday club runs are well attended, remaining the beating heart of the club. They are, however, not without their problems. The committee are asking for suggestions about shorter rides for new or less fit members and would like to reiterate that no one gets dropped on a club run, even if they are struggling and clearly in the wrong group.
During their meeting, the committee discussed the way forward for the club and some of the issues facing us, deciding the club should stay faithful to the established constitution, attempting to be all things to all men, with members taking part in all aspects of cycling, from fitness to racing, mountain biking to time trialling.
Members will have the opportunity to bring their ideas to the club at the AGM, to be held at the Dolphin Hotel on November 11th, where it is hoped that some of the vacant committee posts can be filled. After 9 years as the TT secretary, Terry Cooke is standing down as is Tracey Ibbett after six years as the MTB secretary. Treasurer Alan Moules is also standing down after many years in a number of committee posts.
Though current post holders are willing to stand again, other positions for nomination are:
- Chairman
- Hon. Secretary
- Hon Treasurer
- Club Runs Captain
- Road Race Team Captain
- Evening Time Trial Organiser
- Time Trial Coordinator
- MTB Secretary
- Membership Secretary
- Website Controller
- Press Secretary
- Club Kit Secretary
- Go-Ride
- And two ordinary members.
There will be a club dinner in the late autumn, though the date and location are yet to be set. Stay tuned for information of what is likely to be another good night out.
