Whilst the weekend was a productive one in road racing for St Ives CC, it was Luke Hattersley’s performance in the National 25 mile Time Trial which was probably the most notable performance of the season so far.
After a few months off the bike, Lee Desborough was pleased with fourth place in the Elite event at round 4 of the Elveden estate Road Race Series. It was good race for the club, Malcolm Smith grabbing sixth, and second place going to ex-member Jamie Caldwell, now racing nationally at Elite level.
In the Eastern Region Region Road Race League, Lubomir Belak continued his consistent season with yet another top ten, crossing the line in 7th place in the Paul Simon Homes Road Race over 77 miles at Whitwell in Hertfordshire.
But it was Hattersley’s efforts in the time trial which have given the club the biggest boost. The National 25 mile Time Trial Championships was run on a completely flat course near Lincoln. Luke had been targeting the timed events for some time, and whilst his 10 mile race hadn’t gone as planned, the 25 couldn’t have gone better, winning the event in a time of 55 minutes 38 seconds, beating second placed Christopher Fennell by nearly a minute. “I have been targeting this event for a couple of months,” A Level student Luke said, “But I wasn’t expecting to win, top three was what I was looking for.” With these early season events out of the way, Hattersley is now hoping to concentrate on road racing.” First though, it’s back to college to finish his exams.
