Go-Ride update – 13 November 2012

[heading h=”1″]Last week[/heading]

Last week we had a full house again. I think we will have to do the same until we get our coach numbers up so please book in with James/Mike if you want to attend. Hopefully we should be in better shape by the end of 1Q 2013 as Simon Pauley is currently training and a few other parents are interested in getting involved)

After our usual ride around the park, we had bottle pass practice, with James adding in some Gate relay work with his group. We had relay teams picking up a water bottle off a crate whilst moving turning then dropping off again. There were points awarded for whether the riders could pick the bottle up on first / second attempt, get the bottle back on the crate, with a bonus if it was standing up when they put it down (showing great control). It was a close run competition with only a few people getting their bottles to stand up! The riders had to decide between a careful balance of speed and accuracy.

Riders of the week this session were Sam and Anastasia for some great control in the bottle pass – Sam managed to place the bottle standing up more than any other rider.

Last Saturday was Grafham Cyclocross with a great turnout from St Ives Go Ride members. Well done to all our riders who competed in very muddy conditions without incident. They were:

U12 – Max, Oliver, Ralf, Rhys and Sophie,
Youth – Alex, Amber, Anastasia, CC, Dan, Emma, Emily and Holly

Sophie came third in U12 girls whilst Dan and Holly led the St Ives field in the youth races coming in 42 and 43 respectively in their first race with the U16s. They have a number of years In the youth category and Im delighted with how well they all did just to get round the 1.5 mile course! It was without doubt a tough course and a bit of a baptism by fire with some bikes even getting destroyed by the conditions. By the end, the weight of some of the bikes had increased considerably due to the amount of mud!

On Sunday, Emma was flying the flag again for St Ives, participating in the inter area youth championships at Milton Keynes as part of the Eastern Region team after her consistent performances in the cyclocross league this year.

As usual, we will meet just the other side of the zip-wire from the cafe, since that gives us some protection from the elements. Please remember to bring a water based drink and a helmet. If this is your first time, we will also need a signed parental consent form, copies of which I always have.

Session starts at 10am (finishing at 11.30) so please be prompt so riders don’t have to hang around in what could be less than ideal weather

As I said above, the popularity is now starting to outstrip the number of coaches we have and we are restricted to 28 riders. Please do book in with me ahead of Saturday if you plan on coming.

Three remaining sessions on the first and third Saturday of the month. Therefore the future dates are:

  • 17 November
  • 1 December
  • 15 December

Exciting weekend coming up; I am at the Manchester velodrome with 7 St Ives CC Go Ride riders on Sunday with Alex, Dan, Holly, Lotty, Molly, Sam and Sophie who will be whizzing around the track with British Cycling. as part of the Eastern Region’s Track Super Club. They are all very excited about this so I look forward to updating you next time with how they got on strapped onto bikes with no brakes and no gears!
