From my perspective, one word sums up today’s club swim, I mean run –
HORRENDOUS!!
Rain from start to finish, freezing, biting wind, with somebody playing a cold hose pipe on us all the while. I guess what sums up the conditions best is it took me at least 10 minutes after I got home before I managed to strip off, my hands would just not work on the silly little zip pulls. I left a pool of water on the kitchen floor & spent the next 15 or so minutes in the shower trying to warm up. I then wore a coat & woolly hat around the house for the next couple of hours (the central heating was also on!). Enough of my personal habits, briefly, the ride want something like this:
Palo, Chris, Luke, Jamie, John, Graham, Nigel & myself departed Richardsons – there was one other rider (Pete?) I don’t know if he did the ride as when I looked around he was not there.
Nigel called it a day in Bourn (I think) after we stopped for a minor mechanical & a call of nature. The rest of us pushed on.
We stuck together until around Granchester, when Graham disappeared. Then the inevitable happened going up the climb after Worts Causway, I was dropped. Pressing on alone into the wind/rain towards Fulbourne, I was very glad that Palo, John & Chris waited for me. Luke & Jamie had gone on.
We decided to abandon the stop at Horning-on-sea (not a typo, I’m sure there were waves breaking over the road by now!), and made good time (with me clinging on!) back to just before Swavesy, where Palo & Chris took the shortest route back to St. Ives via the guided busway, John & I continued into Swavesy, then both of us taking the shortest routes to get home.
For me, these were the worst riding conditions this year, possibly the worst since I have been going on club runs. The main problem was being so cold having been soaked to the skin.
Is this sort of thing good for you?
